Review: roberts. – “@ U”

roberts. is a midwestern pop punk band comprised of one person. Using his name as his moniker, Mike Roberts started this journey as an acoustic artist looking to sharpen his songwriting skills. As time progressed and his first two releases “fine” and “split” gained traction, he decided to break further into the full band sound. Producing the music in his home and seeking outside help from producer Matt Qualls of Young Avenue Sound in Memphis, Tennessee (Julien Baker, The Heavy Eyes, Speck Joliet), roberts. was able to find a sound that is explosive yet still tells a story.

The band’s previous effort, the five song ep fine featured roberts. by himself with on acoustic guitar, piano and vocals with light overdubbing, hand percussion and light jazz drums. A drastic departure, the new single, “@ U” find roberts. plugging in and rocking out.  The song combines a great drum pattern and interesting guitar lines underneath the lead vocals. Music wise, the track tows the line well between the modern pop punk of The Story So Far and Neck Deep and the early indie-emo.
