Interview: Taylor Colson

How would you classify your music?  Over your career so far you’ve done Pop, some Dance flavored music, and some more R&B/Soul sounds.

My sound has definitely evolved over the years. I finally feel like I am making music that is so true to who I am. To me, it feels like R&B/Soul that has throwback elements – yet is still very modern.

Who are your top 5 musical influences?

Queen, Cher, Elton John,  Amy Winehouse, & Lady Gaga

What do you want fans to take from your latest single, ‘Hurt Me’?  Did it come from a personal experience, or were you writing about relationships/heart break in general?

A little bit of both. A tiny part of me is always a little nervous that nobody will understand where I’m coming from…  But at the same time it’s so cathartic to be able to express myself.  My hope is that listeners will be able to relate and make them feel something.

We know you’ve toured with blackbear in the US, and lovelytheband in Europe.   How have those 2 experiences shaped you as a live performer?  Do the audiences in Europe respond differently to you than they have here in the U.S.?

They both were special performances since it was my first US shows AND my first shows in Europe.  They were unique experiences, but the crowds in both places were incredible and very supportive!

When did you know that performing was in your blood and that you wanted to make a career in music?

I guess I’ve always known. I’ve loved music since I was a child. I started performing when I was 5 years old and loved everything about it. I was extremely shy growing up, but whenever I performed that changed: I became a different person on the stage. I started realizing as a teenager that I wanted to pursue music as a career and haven’t looked back since.

What do you like to do in your down time, when you aren’t playing or recording music?

I recently learned to cook and I’ve found I love it!  I was never into cooking…  Honestly, I should say I never really tried. At the start of the pandemic, I had the time to really get into it and try out different recipes. It’s become a new passion of mine.

Which do you prefer: Being in a recording studio or playing live?  And what do you like most about playing live?

I love both for different reasons – but playing live is just so special. The connection that you feel with an audience is a feeling that you can’t really put into words. It’s truly incredible and I want to be able to do it forever.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year – especially being in quarantine?

I’ve really been able to figure out who I am, which has helped my art immensely. It’s crazy how your interests can change as you grow up. I really do feel like I’ve found myself…  But I also know I will continue to evolve.

If you could meet, play a gig with, co-write a song with, have dinner or have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Freddie Mercury (Queen). I truly think he is the greatest vocalist that has ever lived. I wish I could play a show with him!

What’s next for you – are you releasing another single & video this year?

There is definitely more music coming this fall, and maybe a video too…..  Keep your eyes on my socials, all will be revealed.
