Interview: Tim King (Soil) on upcoming tour, new album

Following my previous interview, I also had the chance to speak with bassist Tim King of SOiL, the main facilitator of the Back To The 2000s tour, whose band will co-headline with The Union Underground on March 1st. Back in late 2001, SOiL was thrust into the nu metal mainstream with their second album (and major label debut) Scars, on which “Halo” became their signature single. The band currently has six studio albums to date, and while their last two releases, 2022’s Play It Forward and 2023’s Restoration, are retrospectives of covers and re-recordings, the band is far from resting on their laurels. In fact, they’ve since begun work on the follow-up to their 2013 album Whole, with continued emphasis on quality over quantity.

Alongside our discussion of the tour, Tim and I touch upon his roots in Chicago, Illinois’s bustling death metal scene of the early 90s, the continued growth of SOiL since welcoming back original frontman Ryan McCombs, and what the band sets out to achieve with their upcoming album.

About Jake Kussmaul

I come from a family who is passionate about all things music. I learned to sing at an early age, and by 13, had my very own Fender Strat guitar. I tried my hardest at learning all that I could. Because I was born with cerebral palsy, I had to teach myself an adaptive playing style. I learned to write and record my own music, despite these difficulties. In college, I started making great use of my writing abilities by reviewing music, as well as copy editing. I guess it's best to stick with what you know, while welcoming a fair challenge at the same time.
