Interview with Sam Shapiro and Aidan Hutchings of Bleak Mystique

Bleak Mystique is an emerging quartet based in Denver, Colorado. Initially debuting in 2021 as a straight-ahead punk band, their sound – within the span of three EPs – has grown to include nuances of grunge, indie rock, and power pop, while maintaining a poignant lyrical focus on the bliss and strain of modern-day romance. Last weekend, the band celebrated a noteworthy milestone, playing their first theater show at the Fox Theater in Boulder supporting The Stews, and they’ll also embark on their very first national tour beginning on April 13th.

As fate would have it, I spontaneously ran into Bleak Mystique’s frontman, Sam Shapiro, on a comment thread on Instagram, and requested that I interview him. The deal was made even better when another member of the band, bassist Aidan Hutchings, joined us to provide additional insight. Together, we discussed each musician’s formative background, the growth they’d experience following each gig and music release, as well as what they’ve gleaned in the process of catalyzing their music career.

About Jake Kussmaul

I come from a family who is passionate about all things music. I learned to sing at an early age, and by 13, had my very own Fender Strat guitar. I tried my hardest at learning all that I could. Because I was born with cerebral palsy, I had to teach myself an adaptive playing style. I learned to write and record my own music, despite these difficulties. In college, I started making great use of my writing abilities by reviewing music, as well as copy editing. I guess it's best to stick with what you know, while welcoming a fair challenge at the same time.
