‘In The Morning’ Is The New Single By Cary Shields

Cary Shields’ “In The Morning” begins unusually with an electric guitar and banjo intro. After this unique instrumental portion, Shields’ voice comes in, sounding a bit woebegone. Even with this weariness, this song is, nevertheless, a relatively happy one. It’s all about the joys of being a couple.

“You and I when the sun rises,” Shields sings. The best way to start the day is being with the one you love. There’s just something empowering about being with your partner at daybreak. The song is played slowly and gently. It’s the sort of sounds that come off best early, before we’re truly ready for rock & roll. Morning music is gentle on the ears and on the body. You don’t want to bang your head. Instead, you probably want to do a slow-motion Axl Rose body sway, instead. This is the sort of measured rhythm that’s kind of a warmup before any overactive moves are expressly busted out. It’s like stretching exercises, before going on an a.m. jog or a run.

The song includes an electric guitar solo, but it’s one that can be played by sitting back in a chair, as well as standing on a stage. Shields’ weary sounding voice, in fact, might actually just be his morning voice. Just as we need to limber up our muscles before doing any series exercises, so too our voices need a little pre-talking, pre-singing action, as well.

Although this is an overwhelmingly positive song, Shields does also sing about arguing, and then solving disagreements together. He sings about reaching a place where these two agree to disagree on some issues. There’s no such thing as a perfect relationship, where two people agree on absolutely everything. With that said, though, all successful couples come to a place where they learn how to live with any and all disagreements. In other words, their love in one accord that is far more powerful than anything that may divide them.

One wonders if this morning bliss might be a musical/lyrical response to an argument the night before. With the song’s lyric about welcoming the new day, perhaps it’s also a way of being thankful for a new start. Joy comes in the morning. Mercies are new every morning. Couples get to try it again after, hopefully, learning from any mistakes made the day/night before.
