Single Review: “Stayed Down” Vanity Wyze (feat .Sonny King)

Making a slow jam with a real punch to it can be a pain, especially when you’re limited by the aesthetical rules of a scene, but neither of these issues appears to be any sort of a problem for the likes of Vanity Wyze and Sonny King in the new single and music video “Stayed Down.” The carefree summer rhythm alone is enough to set a good pace at the start of “Stayed Down,” but what proceeds is a much loftier display of talents at the microphone than what a lot of the other players in the N.C. circuit have been playing lately to put it quite mildly.

I’ve been hearing a greater excess of bass elements in hip-hop this year than I have the previous five all stacked together in one calendar, but if you’re looking for something along these lines in “Stayed Down,” you’re going to be gravely disappointed by the lean feel of the song’s structure – I know I certainly wasn’t. This is so much more efficient and simplistic than what it would have been under the command of two different rappers, and I would even go so far as to say that Wyze and King sound more compelling with fewer frills than they ever would with a big, boldly colorful framework.

Southern sounds in hip-hop are getting back into the fast lane this July, and if you’re wondering what the shift from coastal interests has been about lately, “Stayed Down” is going to give you all of the information you need to move forward. Vanity Wyze is a true talent, and I don’t think this should serve as the last time he and Sonny King get into the recording studio together. If anything, I would like to hear a complete EP based on the energy they’ve got in this single, as there’s still plenty more to be tapped into.
