Single Review: Seal Party “Maison”

Rebellion in music doesn’t always wind up cultivated in the obvious, and rather than featuring wild haircuts or anarchistic lyrics, Seal Party is getting a little more creative with their rejection of the establishment. The band’s new single “Maison” is a statement all by itself, and it says these players are not about to conform to whatever narrow concept of what crossover soul-rock has to sound like in 2022. This is a crew that steps right out of a time warp in the name of upholding tradition, and to me, their efforts are as outside the mainstream vibe as it gets.

This is such a heavy mix, but “Maison” makes more sense to me as a track with a lot of muscularity to it. There’s an overwhelmingly masculine sensibility to the construction of the narrative in this single and its music video, for that matter, and instead of trying to conceal that just to fit in with what the popular indie model has been consisting of in recent years, this is a band that’s going to be themselves and embrace the natural direction of the song. It sounds indulgent, but at the end of the day, a piece like this one is kind of supposed to.

As much as you look through the channels of the underground heading into the upcoming summer, I don’t believe you’re going to hear another group of artists quite like Seal Party, and they certainly do not mind the exclusivity. Getting noticed at this level is one of the great joys of making something independent of the big-name forces in this industry, and while I believe this act will remain intent on staying an underground fixture, that shouldn’t determine the complete success of what they do in “Maison,” which is one of my favorite new songs right now.
