Single Review: King Falcon – “Cadillac”

“Cadillac” is a one-dimensional rock song simply wouldn’t be true – it’s got too much of a multifaceted disposition for this to be the case, and you don’t have to be an expert music critic to recognize as much this season. “Cadillac” is the latest single from King Falcon, and much like the several other key listens that came before it, this track doesn’t carry a lot of unnecessary weight on the backend, nor any of the forced metaphors (all of which are mundane) that have become a bit of a drag on contemporary rock music no matter who they’re coming from.

This is a zero-B.S. groove session, and alongside the ultra-lean poeticisms our main man is throwing at us from behind the mic, it’s hard to evade temptations to synchronize our hips with the beat right out of the box. I’ve always been a little pickier about rock music than I have other genres in my taste umbrella, but this is simply too charming a listen to turn down, mostly because it features a set of musicians who want to be known for something more than a label or a specific persona that a has-been promoter wants to assign their music.

There’s some classic rock in King Falcon’s list of influences, and if there were ever any questions about it, I would recommend skeptics take a close look at the way the riff parts fall right into the thrusting groove of the percussion in this song. Michael Rubin is a commanding presence at the front of King Falcon, and although he never sounds particularly arrogant or egomaniacal, his swagger as a performer is incredible to witness firsthand. His chemistry with the band is something, but his striking personality would inevitably be the biggest factor in how we break down the narrative here. Outside of the vocal, the relationship between the bassline and the percussion has the most tangible presence in the mix, cushioning some of the sharper verses with a lush rhythmic force capable of pushing us to the edge of our seats just when we need the climax the most.

You don’t have to be hardcore into rock music to appreciate King Falcon and their overall creative trajectory, but for those of us who have a special interest in the genre and its best players, “Cadillac” is something that you need to be listening to for sure. Rubin is a member of a unique class of player in the rock community, and it’s one that does not have the time nor the place for excessive commerciality, but I don’t think this is going to stifle his long-term capacities as a songwriter and performer. He’s too in love with classic rock at its most fierce and confident to devolve into the fleeting trends of today, and because of this reason, his sound is going to be on my radar from here on out.
