Caledonia, Canada’s Jenn Connor continues to bring much-needed innovation to pop music, which has been in stagnation for over a decade. By teaming up with famed American producer Tomas Costanza (Boys Like Girls, Secondhand Serenade), the two emphasize a priority of realness, complete with hooky, but honest structural foundations. Costanza expounded on his thoughts during their initial contact.
“Jenn is a breath of fresh air in a business filled with musical sludge. She doesn’t carry any of the baggage of many of today’s young singers and is truly about the music first.” He adds, “She doesn’t worry about creating a product; she only concerns herself with making music she loves.”
Last week, “Like I Did,” Connor’s newest single from her forthcoming EP, Come Alive, received treatment from multiplatinum producer Rob Wells, who has worked with three internationally chart-topping artists: Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. What’s on offer here strikes a fair amount of pleasant curiosity – colorful tones of deep bass and dripping synths, all working to bolster Connor’s disenchantment with social media-bound youth. There’s decent balance in its presentation as well, considering a majority of pop artists’ sounds come off shallow and cluttered. The growth of “Like I Did” is currently slow, but assured, and can potentially make waves as a year-defining single in good time. Look out for its lyric video soon!
