Album Review: The Hollywood Kills – Episode IV

Episode IV is the title of the newest EP of Nashville’s own The Hollywood Kills and contains five songs that encompass various rock types. The Hollywood Kills is a four piece band that started in 2006 and comprises Brent Powelson as vocalist and guitarist, Cody Wilson also on guitar, Preston Jackson on bass, and Johnny Angel on drums.

The band starts the EP with the track titled “Señorita” a cautionary tale of an enchanting woman that tries to entrap the leading male. The song is a pop-rock ensemble that dabbles with fun rhythms that allow for the talents of drummer, Angel, to really come through. Powelson’s vocal rendering is deliberate, capable, and crisp.

“Chemistry”, the second song off the album has a slightly heavier tone with a hint of blues in the guitars. The track is an homage to the hit television series Breaking Bad. It summarizes the plot of the program describing the troubles main character Walter White goes through to succeed as a chemistry teacher turned drug dealer.

The third track on the EP, “Who Is Your Daddy”, is my least favorite on the album. It starts off with intensity but then loses its charm with its lackluster lyric composition for the chorus. The band is sharp and precise with the instruments but, the repetition throughout gets uninteresting rather quickly.

The final two tracks are well executed, but the composition can be a bit repetitive. In “Tornado” it almost sounds like the chorus is really “tomato.” I can’t be scared of a tomato, I’d make that fool into ketchup. Anyway, I digress.
