Interview: Rob Equiza discusses latest EP, ‘The Last Tier’

Filipino singer-songwriter Rob Equiza is currently promoting his latest EP, The Last Tier. Alongside its purpose as a compilation of B-sides taken from the singles of his debut solo album, Refugees, the release is rounded out by two exclusive tracks, “Surrender” and “Nova Aeterna.” Both tracks begin and end the album with two distinctive styles that exhibit the subject of death. The first is a shoegaze-laden reflection of loved ones who have passed, while the latter is a frenetic instrumental punk jam with sprinklings of sampled quotes, playing out as if life is flashing before one’s eyes.

Having been both a fan and friend of Rob and his music for over a decade, the interview we conducted last weekend was extensive. We not only covered the contents of the EP, but his resilience in pursuing music full-time, the one band that made him almost quit but became some of his closest friends, the bonds he had fostered with his longtime bassist Randall Jarell Marc and drummers Project Spart and Steven Cervo, the inspiration behind his music videos, and his plans for upcoming material.

About Jake Kussmaul

I come from a family who is passionate about all things music. I learned to sing at an early age, and by 13, had my very own Fender Strat guitar. I tried my hardest at learning all that I could. Because I was born with cerebral palsy, I had to teach myself an adaptive playing style. I learned to write and record my own music, despite these difficulties. In college, I started making great use of my writing abilities by reviewing music, as well as copy editing. I guess it's best to stick with what you know, while welcoming a fair challenge at the same time.
