Interview: Kenny Olson discusses new Letrick Olson single “Willow,” upcoming projects

Letrick Olson is a Detroit, Michigan-based five-piece supergroup comprising veteran musicians from the city’s music scene. Back in the early 90s, singer Aaron Letrick and bassist Kevin Chown showcased their distinct prowess in glam metal quartet Pleezer, while guitarist Kenny Olson and keyboardist Jimmie Bones created the Twisted Brown Trucker Band that would eventually catalyze rapper Kid Rock to stardom. Meanwhile, drummer Jason Hartless, the band’s youngest member, has made his bones as a touring and session musician with everyone from Warrior Soul to Insane Clown Posse, and most notably, Ted Nugent.

On February 20th, 2020, the band released their first single, “Thank You”, a Detroit-style rendition of the beloved song by Led Zeppelin. Just two years following their debut, however, Aaron Letrick suffered a tragedy when the love of his life, Willow Rose, was killed by a drunk driver. Nonetheless, the band remained undeterred, channeling their emotions into the hauntingly poignant ballad, “Willow,” which was released on April 28th of this year.

Yesterday, I caught up with Kenny Olson, who was available for an interview. Alongside our discussion of the new single, we also touch upon his formative exposure to the music of Detroit, his success with Kid Rock, as well as more of his current projects.

About Jake Kussmaul

I come from a family who is passionate about all things music. I learned to sing at an early age, and by 13, had my very own Fender Strat guitar. I tried my hardest at learning all that I could. Because I was born with cerebral palsy, I had to teach myself an adaptive playing style. I learned to write and record my own music, despite these difficulties. In college, I started making great use of my writing abilities by reviewing music, as well as copy editing. I guess it's best to stick with what you know, while welcoming a fair challenge at the same time.
