Leaving insecurity in the past with “My Friend” Joanna Borne

By Jamison Costolnick

With the years lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, struggles and insecurities in regards to who deserves and needs your companionship grew. Having so much time apart, friendships naturally faded and circles grew smaller. Feeling like you’d receive radio silence unless you sent the check-in text first, many started feeling insignificant within the groups of friends they used to be tied to at the hip.

Slowly emerging from this quarantined time, groups of friends, especially in the younger generations are more eager than ever to get back out and together to make up for lost time. However, not without alerting everyone on their social media timeline that they are doing so. With this, those that no longer found themselves on the invite list, couldn’t help but feel small.

This is where singer-songwriter Joanna Borne comes in with her song “My Friend.” Deeply empathizing with this feeling, growing up herself experiencing similar and looking back, she hated the burden complex she developed when trying to salvage such friendships that weren’t worth fighting for any longer. That being said, themes of putting yourself first and focusing on giving your energy to those that cherish and reciprocate such, can be heavily found throughout her discography. Hoping to assure those feeling alone and silenced that they are heard.

Checking in with others, asking about their day, their families, it all became routine, almost an obligation. However, when the same consideration isn’t being initiated from the other end every once in a while, it really weighs on your conscience.

One begins to question if they are crossing others’ minds at all, and it can be an extremely lonely thing to feel, even during this time of reunion.

With these emotions in mind, Joanna wrote her track, “My Friend” to comfort those feeling excluded and burdensome. Hoping to lower their insecurity and remind those that they also deserve to go out and make up for memories and time lost. Your people are there, you just have to go looking for them and although it might feel bad now, giving others a chance may not be such a bad thing after all.
