Single Review: Mighty Koba “2 Many (ft. Jaey London)”

From the second the beat pounces on the melodic underpinning in “2 Many,” it’s pretty clear to the listener that the groove-powered afrobeat track is out to put us in a mood this June. Neither the chaotic grind of trap nor the artificial bassline of mainstream rap are present in the foundation of this single, and yet the aesthetic is steeped in hip-hop more than anything else. In both the music video and this song on its own, we’re getting to know Mighty Koba and Jaey London on a personal level – and embracing the intimacy created by their harmonies.

The lead vocals are intertwined in this track as opposed to competing for the same spot in the mix, and while I like the streamlined fashion of “2 Many” as is, I can see this being remixed for the dancefloor and having an even heavier rhythm to swing in our direction. The template is raw and enriched by the melodic wit of these two players, but if Mighty Koba was able to get a little more mileage out of this same composition, I think it would be intriguing not only for his serious fans but for casual pop lovers as well.

“2 Many” is both too big for the hip-hop model and indebted to its more harmony-driven hybrids, many of which are starting to gain a lot of traction on the mainstream level in 2022, and

I love what it introduces for Mighty Koba and his collaborator Jaey London the same. These are two musicians who I was not familiar with ahead of hearing this track for the first time and checking out its companion music video, but if this were to be the only occasion on which they shared a recording space, I think it would be a shame for sure.
