Single Reviews: Major Spark “Run Run Run” & “Beautiful Noise”

Although the new singles “Beautiful Noise” and “Run Run Run” were both performed and produced by the same act in Major Spark, there’s a lot of contrast to be appreciated between these two tracks. “Beautiful Noise” brandishes simple melodies fused with compressed beats in an electronic dance fashion, but “Run Run Run” is more aggressive; built on a power-pop concept that speaks to the OGs in alternative rock, this song is perhaps the more surprising of the two when studied side by side. It’s easy to mix a rock track into an EDM piece, but to drive something equally intriguing into two singles as this act has takes a talent that can’t be learned at any school.

There’s a punk rock essence to both of these performances that, while more cosmetically evident in “Run Run Run,” is one of the main reasons why I think the beats in “Beautiful Noise” sound as restless as they do. The pent-up emotion in this track wants to come undone so badly, but it’s forced into place by a synthetic harmony that was made for the nightclub rather than the underground beat. Split-screen dynamics are apparently what this duo does best, and they’re definitely making it appear so in these provocative new singles.

Major Spark is rocking a surprisingly versatile look in “Run Run Run” and “Beautiful Noise” that has the potential to turn a lot of heads this season, but if I had to guess if this was the best they could turn in together creatively, I would have to say we’re only hearing a taste of what they can really do. Experiments of this sort can only lead to more exciting discoveries down the line, and for this being a tipping-off moment in their time in the spotlight, I like what I’m hearing so far.
