Single Review: Veve C “Breeze”

Don’t mistake the visuals in the new music video for Veve C’s “Breeze” to be a seduction sequence – rather than pandering to the standard among a lot of female rappers in her scene, this is one player who is presenting her personality straight-up and without the frills some build entire characters around. Forget the nicknames, the alter egos, the feature-laden introductions; in “Breeze,” we’re getting to know a rapper through her stealthy execution and use of barebones arrangements to get to the meat and potatoes of a hook before other performers would have laid down a single verse.

On the instrumental front, this is about as cut and dry as you can get without spilling into the low-fidelity aesthetic you’ll find haunting the midnight hour on YouTube, and it needs to be this way for Veve C to get the most out of her lyrics. She just needs a blank canvas – nothing more, nothing less – and her poetic paint does the rest of the work, unhindered by any of the bombast and filler that typically fills in the space between beats in both mainstream and indie rap the same. Call it basic if you want, but in a world of unwanted excess, it’s a bit of a revelation.

Veve C isn’t going to be the sort of rapper who hides her emotions behind a theatrical identity, and if you don’t pick that up from “Breeze,” you might not be listening to the right song. She’s assertive and fierce without barking out any verses in this performance, and if this is a sneak preview into what her future material could consist of, her time in the underground is likely to be limited. It’s easy to outgrow when you’ve got the talent, and this is someone who exudes skill the second she steps up to the microphone.
