Music Existence Because of Music, We Exist
Sporting a west coast-style beat and melodic elements that are far more minimal than what I usually hear from this artist, Star2’s new single “Big Bands” feels like an homage to the old school, from its compositional construction to the featured artist helping him dish out the verses. As a linguist, $tupid Young is quite frankly the most talented rapper Star2 has ever stepped into the booth with, and he largely carries the body of the song in a way his collaborator can only support. It’s in the climax where our leading man takes over the spotlight, and all in all, you can’t listen to a track like this without crediting both of the players owning the beat.

All of the kick in this song is coming off of the vocals as opposed to the verses themselves, which is starkly different from the synthetic-laden poeticisms a lot of other rappers will unveil inside of a retro track like “Big Bands.” I don’t even get the impression that Star2 is trying to go straight ‘90s L.A. with this concept, but instead that the music is inherently tethered to a classic era in the history of hip-hop when simplicity fed into natural vocal talents in a way that just isn’t present in the contemporary genre.
Showmanship is still of high value to both Star2 and $tupid Young the same, and if you didn’t know this before you listened to their new single and music video “Big Bands,” there’s no way you’re walking away from its beat without learning as much. There’s a lot of debate about what makes a good throwback nowadays, but to me, it’s a song like “Big Bands” that didn’t start out as a tribute that feels the most authentic and true to the model it’s inspired by. This is a quality summer jam, and likely not the last hot track either of these players will drop in 2022.
