“Taiwan Beats Showcase” – The Insights On The Show

“Taiwan Beats Showcase” has organized six different groups of musicians to perform at six different cultural sites during SXSW 2022. Sorry Youth, DJ QuestionMark, Olivia Tsao, Mong Tong, Sleeping Brain, and Elephant Gym represent six distinct musical genres, ranging from alternative rock to eastern psychedelic music. The musical showcase featured cultural attractions such as the Wufeng Lin Family Mansion, Electric Flower Cars, the Chuang Mei Theater, the enigmatic electronic music venue Pawnshop, Kaohsiung Harbor, and The Venue.

The showcase began with Sorry Youth, who performed at the Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden. Sorry Youth performs alternative music with a local character on the stage of the Grand Flower Hall, where the family used to stage conventional opera during public festivities. DJ QuestionMark, the DMC World DJ Champion, performed that night on a carnival truck to add to the visual and lyrical passion. The truck was lit up with neon tubes, giving his performance a cyberpunk feel. Even SXSW’s music director James Minor was awestruck by the performance. Olivia Tsao, the Golden Melody winner, shot her performance at her hometown’s Chuan Mei Theater to add to the production’s uniqueness. The theatre is famous for being one of the last to utilize hand-painted posters to promote current productions. It is also one of the venues for the yearly LUCfest.

Psychedelic folk electronic duo Mong Tong played at the mysterious Taipei underground club Pawnshop, where they gave the crowd a sneak peek inside the club with “A Nambra” and “Minyo Pop.” Electronic rock band Sleeping Brain chose the experimental venue WET BASE in the Tiaotong business zone for their demonstration. They collaborated with VJ Ludol777 to transform the area into a lighting playground during filming. Finally, Elephant Gym’s performance showcase included footage from their performance at Megaport, Kaohsiung’s largest event. It featured songs from the band’s May album “Dreams.”
