Album Review: Sound Animal – Amphibians We

The dissonance happening in the new single “Amphibians, We” from Sound Animal is an eclectic wonderment. Strangely hypnotic and bravely (and ambitiously) harmonic, “Amphibians, We” flowers the ethers with a mixture of ambient and curvaceous, warped sounds. Like a kaleidoscope capturing vibrant colors, the ebb and flow of the awe-like sounds is reminiscent of The Beatles’ “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” meets organic flute instrumentals. Completely free of hypertension, “Amphibians, We” transforms the listener into a trippy, dazzling atmosphere.

Perhaps the ecosystem that unfolds throughout the instrumental track is indicative of the amphibious transformation. If so, it’s spot on and as a listener, it’s easy to fall prey to this track’s contagious meditative powers. How do you describe the word green? You start by listening to “Amphibians, We”. Somehow Sound Animal has concocted a way, and maybe it started in a sound lab petri dish and brewed together organic wind instrumentation with a gliding, melodic synth. I’m struck by the boldness of the sounds, yet they are so nuanced and consistently rapturous. I’m not saying it’s repetitive or even pedantic, it’s hypnotic and you can almost feel the goose pimples on your skin revealing themselves.

“Amphibians, We” has moments where the outer layers of the song start to peel away, and the undercurrent moves into a hollow or even cavernous sound. It’s quick but not jerky. It’s a smooth transition that the listener feels that bounce and flies straight into it, only to land like it’s a cloud. Airy and light, “Amphibians, We” is peculiar and surreal. The levity of the sound is one thing and tiny droplets of bass tones mark their way down some of the pathways. It’s very subtle, but it’s there. I highly suggest listening to this a few times because with each spin, like looking at a painting, you hear something or see something you didn’t see the first time. It definitely grows on your psyche and you really start to feel connected to the flow in a whole new way.

I sensed sitar tones and Hindi-like vibes. If you close your eyes and listen to this track you become completely at peace and calm. I highly recommend this song for a yoga practice or even just a calming presence. With so much noise and distractions, “Amphibians, We” succeeds at being a highly focused, immersive song. I’m completely transfixed at the complexities of the sounds that all rush together and create this elevated sonic journey. This song has a very outdoorsy feel to it, and it’s also very sunny. When I think of amphibians I do think of rainy, jungle-like and downpouring. I felt a rainstorm of sounds, but not in the rushing or overwhelming way while listening to “Amphibians, We”. It’s a bright, potent sound with elegance and poignant undertow. I loved the way this song moves and stirs the imagination like no other. If you’re a fan of the ambient genre, “Amphibians, We” is a must-listen. It’s a game-changer and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to experience this track.
