Sophia Berlyn – the 20-something Novocastrial singer songwriter – returns in 2021 with her third studio single, Late Night Call. Presenting similar sonic notes to Angie McMahon, Tia Gostelow, and Middle Kids, BERLYN’s music is self-assured, energetic and emotive. Listen to the exclusive premiere below:
“‘Late Night Call is about that feeling you get when you’re first realising you’re into someone, and maybe that wasn’t part of the plan. That overwhelming, all-consuming excitement, but then you don’t want to let on just how much you’re interested yet. It’s basically a song about being young, messing around, and enjoying the chase.” – BERLYN
With a playful, dynamic delivery BERLYN’s alluring vocal performance draws the listener in with a sultry matter of fact-ness backed by swelling strings coupled with an anthemic chorus that is best enjoyed with the windows down on a warm summers afternoon.
On Late Night Call, BERLYN tackles the turbulence of a casual relationship with positive hopefulness, and a rawness mirroring. At the time of writing BERLYN drew on some very specific influences; Mistake by indie giants Middle Kids, Ruby Fields and Same Mistakes by Laurel, with Late Night Call falling somewhere between the three.
“Ruby Fields brings such a brilliant blunt energy and the way she tells a story influenced my writing and Same Mistakes was one of my favourite tracks around the time I was recording this track, and it influenced the production a good deal. Such a great moody walking song.” – BERLYN.
Late Night Call will be live on all streaming platforms on Friday October 22nd – Keep up to date with BERLYN via her Instagram and Spotify.
