Music Existence Because of Music, We Exist
Okay so let’s start things off with your most recent single, Rocketship. Where did this single come from?
The concept for “rocket ship” started when I was sitting in my car. Sometimes I like to just drive somewhere alone to get into my songwriting mode, and this time I was looking at the night sky when the idea came. I was thinking about my relationship at the time, how falling in love feels too good to be true, out of this world. That’s when I knew I wanted to make a song called “rocket ship” about how intense it can feel to fall in love or even just to develop a crush on someone who you know you can’t be with.
Whose music are you loving most right now?
Right now my favourite artists are Keshi, Gideon, and Pink Sweat$. When I am looking for something more upbeat, I like to listen to Dempsey Hope and Cheat Codes. And I’m always going to love my old favorites like Jay Sean and Akon. I have a “Yoyo’s top ten” playlist on my Spotify page that I update regularly so go check that out!
So tell us, how did this whole music thing start for you?
I don’t have any formal music training, so it’s all pretty new. I’ve always loved singing though–I used to sing around the house so much that it would annoy my whole family. During quarantine I finally had the time to start writing and making my own music, and I found out quickly that I loved that process. Ever since, making music has been such an important part of my life–it’s therapeutic and such a great creative outlet.
What are you doing when you’re NOT working on music?
I’m a big reader. Right now I’m reading Klara and The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, but my favorite book of all time is Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. I also love to cook–I just made some sushi and okonomiyaki for my roommates last weekend. Other than that, I grew up playing sports so I love getting outside, being active, and just spending quality time with the people that I love.
What’s next for you as an artist, can we expect anything else this summer?
I have a lot of fun projects that I am working on right now. The next song I am releasing is called ‘sunrise’. To help promote it, I am waking up at sunrise everyday and making a tik tok. Would love to see you all join the #sunrisechallenge!
