Single Review: Proph3t of Rag3 – “Venom” (feat. Samantha Bower)

Brendan Lange is a Florida-based EDM producer and game developer. Under the name Proph3t of Rag3, the artist’s focus on engaging sonic textures and a complementary visual component contribute to his distinction within the scene. From his initial output of 2021, Lange has released his fourth single, “Venom,” featuring up-and-coming rock singer/songwriter Samantha Bower.

Much like his previous material, Lange’s signature take on dubstep – what he refers to as ‘darkstep’ – plays a part in complementing the single’s cover art. The cave-like accents on the percussion are an immediate factor, while the synth layers emit a kind of presence that stands on its own – both in the verse arrangements and the drops – and as a broad atmospheric accompaniment. Bower’s presence as a vocalist rounds out the nature of the involvement, playing up a certain gothic and sinister characteristic, yet somehow sounding more angelic in the process. Ultimately, both Lange and Bower’s musical identities work effectively in unifying the song’s presentation.

About Jake Kussmaul

I come from a family who is passionate about all things music. I learned to sing at an early age, and by 13, had my very own Fender Strat guitar. I tried my hardest at learning all that I could. Because I was born with cerebral palsy, I had to teach myself an adaptive playing style. I learned to write and record my own music, despite these difficulties. In college, I started making great use of my writing abilities by reviewing music, as well as copy editing. I guess it's best to stick with what you know, while welcoming a fair challenge at the same time.
