Karl McCann is a Liverpool, England-based indie folk singer/songwriter currently signed to 72rpm Records. McCann’s penchant for thoughtful, cathartic songwriting has earned him sizable local clout, through his appearances on the Made in Liverpool TV program, as well as on BBC Radio Merseyside. On Monday, McCann released his latest single, “Roses,” which follows the success of his third full-length, A Series of Lucid Stories.
“Roses” maintains McCann’s distinctive stylistic approach – an acoustic bed of bittersweet chord sequences complemented by a melodic, whisper-tinged vocal tonality. A faint string arrangement accentuates its involvement, while thematically, the combined elements similarly highlight an anecdote of a tarnished relationship. What was seen as beautiful and idyllic is tossed aside, coupled with the inadvertent destruction of memories that were not yet made. As the song progresses, I appreciate the shifting nuance of its thematic perspective. From one side, it may resemble someone already defeated, with newfound looming uncertainty as to whether a connection was actually made. Conversely, the angle could also signify the longing for a second chance, both to eradicate emotional distance, and subsequently nurture something pure that had otherwise been present from the very beginning. Nonetheless, the song resonates, and is a competent piece in starting McCann’s output for 2021.
