An American Lie – Rory D’Lasnow

“An American Lie” brings to life the deep feelings that I have been having these past several months. With all this crazy news going on, the COVID pandemic and protests against the terrible tragedies I have often thought to myself “what can I do” to help here? It’s been over two months since the words “I Can’t Breathe” were uttered. When I first heard those words, tears welled up in my eyes, realizing the hatred and indifference that still plagues our country is alive and well. For the next week that was all I could think about, the foundation that our country was started upon was a smoke screen for so much inequality. When this song says “shut it down and start over”, I take it as a call to action – that we as a nation can do better, and we must do better. Every year we hear about the police brutality that is continually committed on innocent people of color. While our everyday lives go on and this horrific story slowly fades into the deepest recess of our mind, we need to keep this song , “An American Lie” in our minds so every once in a while we will be reminded to do our part to make the world a better place. Songs written amidst a tragedy capture the feelings of a world in mourning. Rory D’Lasnow has given us a way to relive the emotions we all had on that day, hopefully we can all take it and use it to collectively change the world for the better.
