Michael Armstrong is a rapper and songwriter from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Armstrong fared respectably with his mixtape Overdue, which he debuted under the name Mic Strong in 2012. Following a five-year hiatus primarily devoted to faith, reflection, and artistic growth, Armstrong vowed to no longer use profanities in future material. What resulted from that recuperation was a stronger, focused, and, to an extent, more mature effort in 2017’s Four Fun. Even another lapse would not deter him, as his 2019 follow-up single, “In Due Time,” featuring acclaimed Las Vegas rapper Dizzy Wright, would sustain his presence in the hip hop scene.
Now, Mic Strong is back with his first single for 2020, “Vice City.” The song showcases his continued observational thematic approach, which flows especially well with the breezy, old school-influenced instrumentation. Once the chorus hits, Armstrong’s smooth vocals and the lush, reverb-tinged piano strikes complement each other seamlessly. In this era of hip-hop, it’s refreshing to hear a single with a more straightforward, genuinely feel-good vibe, rather than the more common drug-laden influences of trap music. Noting Armstrong’s newfound perspective on life, it is possible to accumulate an abundance of life’s pleasures without the experience reaching a point of excess.
