Live Review + Gallery: Santigold and Naeem at Hammerstein Ballroom (05.03.19)

On Friday, May 3, 2019, Santigold’s “Ten Years Golder” tour came to New York, NY at Hammerstein Ballroom. Opening the show was Naeem (formerly known as Spank Rock) who did a mostly R&B set under his new moniker, which happens to be his first name. Naeem was lit by two blue spotlights and had a rectangular screen projecting visuals behind him while performing songs created under his name.

Santigold took the stage around 9:20PM joined by two musicians and two dancers. She performed songs from her debut record, Santogold, such as “L.E.S. Artistes,” “Lights Out,” and “Creator,” for which she asked audience members to come on stage and dance, plus “Shove It” having Naeem joining her on stage for his verse. She also treated the audience to songs throughout her catalog such as “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” (from 99¢),  “Run The Road,” and “Coo Coo Coo” (from her latest album, I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Session). Santigold seemed thrilled to perform in the city she formerly called home, mentioning she once saw Devo as an audience member at the same venue in 2005.
