Chicago’s own Smashing Pumpkins headlined 101WKQX’s The Night’s We Stole Christmas on Friday, November 30th at the famed Aragon Ballroom. The show was a sweaty, sardine can sell-out that saw the hometown heroes play a varied setlist that included hits, deep tracks, cover songs, and new tunes from their recently released album, SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT (see setlist below).
The songs from the new album were well received by the Pumpkin faithful (the new album is short…at just over half an hour…, sweet, and super catchy, as it blends true Pumpkin roots with a modern feel), as were the cover tunes – James Iha singing lead on The Cure’s Friday I’m In Love, and Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath joining the band for a turn on The Cars’ Dangerous Type. And the hits had the sold-out crowd singing strongly along with frontman, Billy Corgan’s signature vocal tones.
The evening wrapped up with a friendly family vibe, punctuated by a balloon drop and Billy Corgan bringing his three-year-old son on stage with him while the band performed a song. Corgan’s joy at sharing the moment with his son was evident from the big smile on dad’s face. And it seemed his son was enjoying the moment as well, as he took a run at a big balloon and gave it a giant kick into the crowd.
