Gallery: Everything Is Terrible! – The Great Satan at Gramercy Theatre 09.05.18

On Wednesday, September 5, 2018, the Everything Is Terrible!  live show, “The Great Satan”, featured content that came from over 2,000 horror, Satanic panic, and Christian VHS tapes that were remixed, re-edited, and re-contextualized by the collective that has been around for a decade. Before the show started, Satan appeared on screen surrounded by flames, while the audience arrived and sat in their seats.

After showing a few clips, Reverend Jealous Devine and Goat appeared on stage and the story began, with additional characters of New Testa-Man, Skeletosis, a Minion and of course, The Great Satan arriving later. Without giving too much away, the evening was quite weird and wonderful. I was delighted to recognize footage from Bibleman (the superhero series created and starring Willie Aames, who played Buddy on “Charles and Charge”), plus a scene from Jerry Maguire. Speaking of that film, EIT is collecting VHS copies to create The Jerry Maguire pyramid which become a permanent structure in The Great American Desert. They’ve collected 23,000 copies to date plus had two crosses comprised of tapes on stage, and an additional seven copies were given last night in New York. For such a populated city, The Great Satan was very displeased with our Jerry offerings.

The show concluded with The Great Satan dancing to “Where Evil Grows” by The Poppy Family among the seven copies of Jerry Maguire that were placed at his feet, with many audience members proceeding downstairs to buy EIT items from the merchandise table.
