Singer/producer Dan Black recently unveiled “Farewell,” the leading single off his to-be-released Do Not Revenge album (slated for June 6). By itself, the song aptly highlights his ultimately flowing collaborative approach with fellow popstar Kelis. The writing process exhibits an interesting evolution. As Black notes, both artists were undergoing transformative periods in their lives. However, from a subtler angle, their very collaboration breathed newfound spontaneity. Whereas Kelis previously recorded her parts in a single session, Black freshened its skeleton that been left simmering for months on end.
Combined with its accompanying video, “Farewell” now provides a deeper thematic insight. The shifting perspective between fuzz-tinged black and white and sleekly digital seems to represent past and present reflection. A closer look emphasizes the attention to detail in which their images complement each perspective stylistically. When the full product is considered, both Black and Kelis have clearly peaked in their means of artistic expression.
