Interview: Fine Fine Titans

1.Did growing up in Grand Rapids Michigan have any influence on your post-hardcore sound?

Evan: It most definitely did for me. Growing up here we always had a good scene filled with all sorts of bands that you could put in the genre and it really sparked my interest.

Jenn: I came from the Detroit area and I think that maybe indirectly, the city had influence on the sound of our band but more specifically, it had a major influence on my music preference in general. Heart and soul is deeply rooted in that city and as a kid, I can’t remember a shortage of jazz or rock concerts existing.

2.What makes Fine Fine Titans stand out from other post hardcore bands?

Jenn: It’s difficult to give an unbiased answer here. Perhaps it’s just the specific blend of music tastes that we share as a collective that we can only say is the true difference…because each band is unique in that perspective. In our case, that extends from progressive rock and metal to funk and R&B and anything in between that sparks us…add it to the melting pot of our individual experiences that inspire, elevate and ground us and you have yourself a Fine Fine Titans stew.

3.Jennifer, you are quoted as saying “I’m a dreamer. I’m inspired by change and those who are impassioned enough to make positive strides despite hardships.” How hard is it to remain a dreamer in the music business?

Jenn: I’ve really only scratched the surface of the industry so I can’t imagine my feelings will stay consistent through time but right now, I’m on the upswing. Had you asked me this question a mere three months ago…or even towards the beginning of the year…a very different answer could be given. I can’t say the music business is a cakewalk by ANY means but so far, that hasn’t diminished my dreams when you have so many sneaky vultures and manipulators pulling strings. At the end of the day, we just have to find a way to let those difficulties fuel us to create change…although easier said than done, I understand.

4.Speaking of change, what was the period of time when you were reconfiguring the Fine Fine Titans lineup like for you and the band?

Evan: It definitely had its rough moments since we were also in the middle of trying to write the album, but it really couldn’t have worked out any better than it did. I think this is the best this band has ever clicked both musically and on a friendship level. From the completion of the writing process all the way up to today, we’re all completely pumped with the music and what we’re doing.

5.How has your sound developed from your debut EP Arms to 2015’s LP Renaissance?

Evan: Overall I just think our sound has matured. I really love what we wrote on both Arms and Omega, but we spent a lot of our time confined in this box trying to do that one “thing”. When we started writing Renaissance we never really talked about what sound we wanted to go for, we literally just sat down and wrote songs. If we loved them, they made the cut and we moved on. Then when we began working with Randy Roswell during recording, he really pushed us outside of the box both with the combination of tones and effects, as well as what we all thought we were capable of as musicians.

6.What was the biggest challenge in making the leap from EP’s to an LP?

Evan: I would say the attention to detail because as we wrote the album we would constantly go back and rework from songs we had completed prior. We wanted every song and every piece to really matter. This happened all the way up to the recording process, but Randy really did an amazing job at keeping us on track and giving us some great ideas on how to make each part better.

7.The music video for “Mistress” is strikingly beautiful and haunting. What can you tell us about the making of the video? Who came up with the concept?

Jenn: Thank you! The original concept was shaped around the idea of the lyrics…the story of a young, bright and cheery woman who was hunted and then haunted by a manipulative man which brought out a darkness in her; very much a Maleficent story. I had the idea of portraying that in a witchy way and when I brought the idea to Three Goats Moving Pictures, they came up with some beautiful details and a way to really evolve the story while maintaining the mystery. It was really fun for me, personally, because I love both helping to create and play a part in the theatrics.

8.The music you listen to can tell a lot about a person. What is the first and last album that you have bought?

Evan: My first was Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits and my last was Bring Me the Horizon’s That’s the Spirit.

Jenn: First album purchased: TLC Crazy Sexy Cool. Latest Album: Wolf Alice Blush.

9.There is a delicate yet strong presence on “Mistress” which is also reflected on the album cover of Renaissance. Can you please discuss this theme and why it is important to you?

Jenn: In the past few years, I think we’ve really been inspired by the idea that strength can be found and developed once you accept, embrace and encourage vulnerability. I think as teenagers and as we entered adulthood, we were taught by society that we must be tough. We must be successful. We must not be emotional or weak or show any sign of sweat or failure. As we’re getting older, we’ve been finding how that can really close a lot of people off around you. You can cut yourself off from you and what we’re realizing is that disconnection is the very thing that will bring a person to weakness and unfulfillment. With our reflection of how we have worked as people and as a band in the past, we’ve taken it to this album. It definitely has served as a rebirth for us and I think that it reflects in the songs.

10.What is up next for Fine Fine Titans after the Renaissance album release?

We will continue writing as we usually do but in the upcoming year, touring and playing out as much as we can will be the focus. We’ve spent too much time at home. It’s time to get our sea legs back.

Renaissance is out on November 21st through CI Records
