The first track I ever heard from Sonyae was “The Gift/Regift” off of her EP entitled, “Leave Of Presence” (released 11/28/14). Mark my words, I sat back and said aloud, “How the hell do you sell someone off of the first track?”
Well, that quote wasn’t verbatim, I dropped the F-bomb. 
North Carolina has some of the best hidden gems, and the more I get out into the market and meet artist, I find gems like Sonyae (pronounced Son-yay). How would I describe her sound? Militant, commanding, raw truth in her lyrics. Drawing inspiration from Kanye West, and being surrounding by Gospel early on, there are incredible elements of back packing in her style and poetry. Church.
There is also a familiar hunger that I sense in her flow, like that of J. Cole’s, another extremely talented rapper from North Carolina.
To classify her as a “femcee” would be insulting to the art altogether as Sonyae is a true Hip-Hop artist, and emcee holding a torch besides her lyrical counterparts Drique London on the smoothest track I’ve heard since Nasir Jones’, ‘Purple’ in a long time, “Hunger” (produced by U’nique Music), and “Feeling | Filling” feat. P.A.T Junior (produced by The Jake)on her EP.
“…she is one of the illest emcees around…not a femcee because she can hang with the fellas, bar for bar! So don’t use that word because it kind of boxes an artist in and already gives consumers a seemingly preconceived notion of what to expect…and she is very, very, very dope [of an] artist”, stated a very proud, Brian “MixEngineer” Kidd who recently collaborated with Sonyae on “Truck, Jewels & Filters” – K-Hill & Debonair P feat. Sonyae & JSWISS.
