SPEAK Signs to Wind-Up Records… on National Tour with RAC!

Building on the momentum from their critically-hailed new album PEDALS and their tours with Gemini Club, The Griswolds and RAC (who they once again join on a national Fall tour beginning this week; tour dates below), Austin-based synthpop band SPEAK are proud to announce their signing to WIND-UP RECORDS. “Wind-up is fighting an uphill battle to win over the hearts and minds of a group of jaded young men who’ve been the through the wringer of the music business,” says SPEAK lead vocalist/keyboardist Troupe Gammage cheekily. “So far they’ve shown nothing but patience, enthusiasm, empathy, and ambition, so either we’re fortunate enough to have found one of the few good record labels or they’re a brilliant group of con-men waiting to reveal their diabolical intentions.” Wind-up will continue to promote Pedals, broadening its reach into a much wider and mainstream market.

“After seeing SPEAK play live in NYC, it was clear that they were very talented, complex musicians, who made a very organic and pure connection to the audience,” adds Ed Vetri, Wind-up Records CEO / President. “They understand who they are and present an honest performance of that each night on stage, especially with their gripping lyrics that tell stories and music that brings everything to life.”

Widely praised and revered, Pedals is a mélange of sounds textured by the swathy electric guitars of Nick Hurt, the funky-drummer-esque rhythms of Jake Stewart, the syncopated bass of Joey Delahoussaye, and the soaring three-part harmonies punctuated by lush synths and the distinctive falsetto-tinged vocals of Troupe Gammage. Austin American-Statesman hailed Pedals calling it “infectious-but-controlled camp of Tears for Fears that will bounce around in your head long after the songs fades. On Pedals, SPEAK is dreaming – and delivering – big.” PopMatters likened the album to “explosive dance songs to pump up the crowd and a chill middle section followed by a few slow, emotional numbers, ending boldly with chants that leave a happy ringing in your ears.” Aquarian Weekly chimes, “SPEAK are a refreshing take on electro-pop, carving a musical path of their own in the midst of similar bands like Haim and Passion Pit that will surely develop over time and carry the Austin, TX quartet to prominence.”

Formed in 2008 in Austin, SPEAK have been lavished with applause and praise from the get-go. Winning Best New Band in 2010 and then Best Indie Group in 2011 at Austin Music Awards, they continued their budding musical takeover with stints at Austin City Limits Music Festival, and tours with Ra Ra Riot, Tegan & Sara, Miniature Tigers, and Tally Hall, among others. Recently, the song “I Should’ve Guessed”, their collaboration with RAC (with whom they kick off a national tour this week), shot up to the #1 position on Hype Machine earlier this Summer. The album track and video “Gates” followed that song up the same chart. A certified hit on SoundCloud with nearly 1.5million combined plays, their singles have racked up massive play numbers: “Be Reasonable, Diane” has bested 250,000, “Peaks” has generated over 300,000 and “Gates” is approaching a whopping 700,000 plays.

About the signing to the label, Troupe concluded, “We are extremely excited to see what Wind-up are capable of, and we hope they use their impressive creative and business acumen for good rather than the industry-standard evil.”

SPEAK is Troupe Gammage (keyboard, lead vocals), Nick Hurt (guitar, vocals), Joey Delahoussaye (bass, vocals), and Jake Stewart (drums).
