China Rats – Don’t Play With Fire

China Rats release the Don’t Play With Fire EP on September 30th. The band, who appeared Reading & Leeds festivals this summer, have also confirmed details of a UK headline tour for this October, including their first London headline show at Sebright Arms on October 9th.

A four piece rock ‘n’ roll band from Leeds, China Rats are inspired by a love of punk rock and the classic British guitar bands. That is, the very best bands – the ones with the greatest knack at conveying the frustrations and absurdities of their young lives. In these times where – let’s face it – prospects can generally be pretty crappy for men in their early 20s, China Rats have an irresistible energy and a turn of self-deprecating, tongue in cheek phrase, lyrics that could only have bubbled up from this part of the world. It’s not hard to see why their last hometown show sold out and festival bookers from Texas to the Med have been so quick to sign them up to play.

China Rats released their debut EP, To Be Like I last summer. Catching the ear of Radio 1’s champion of new bands Huw Stephens, a demo of another song, No Money, was play listed on the BBC Radio 1 Introducing Playlist less than a year after the band had formed. To Be Like I was featured in the cult Canal+ / C4 French drama The Returned (Les Revenants) and the band were booked for tastemaker festivals in Amsterdam (London Calling), at Transmusicales (France) and Eurosonic (The Netherlands) as well their first US shows at SXSW.

Last July, China Rats were booked to play the tiny Villa Camp stage at Benicassim the night before the start of the main festival. The result was an impromptu mosh pit and a festival booker who wished he had booked them for the main festival. Happily for our Yorkshire heroes, the next day Bat For Lashes couldn’t make it onto the site and the festival booker had his chance. China Rats stepped up to the plate and bigger mosh pits ensued. This year, following time spent honing their brutally tight live set and working on new songs, the band were one of the first new groups to secure a Benicassim booking.

The Don’t Play WIth Fire EP was recorded in Cottage Road Studios in Leeds and produced and mixed by Matt Peel (Eagulls, Pulled Apart By Horses).
