Rustbelt rockers, The Speedbumps, will release new full-length album When The Darkness Comes on July 14. The band have just debuted first single, “Love Is War,” a raucous telling of romantic tumult powered by evocative, grainy vocals and penetrative, high-speed strings. Lead singer Erik Urycki tells us “the song is basically about the post-relationship waters we all navigate. Cliché as it may be, it’s not hyperbole to say it’s a pill of bitter loneliness, when you’re the one taking it.”
The new track’s intermingling of recognizable, rootsy folk and a more riotous, rock approach implies the band has evolved since 2015’s Soil to the Seed. The sound wanders purposefully through the grit of Northern Ohio neighbors The Black Keys, the thoughtfully breathy melodies of Ryan Adams and the panicked pace of Trampled By Turtles, all at once.
