Blueprint Blue’s single “Bad Dreams” is like taking a time machine back to the late 60s early 70s. It has a mellowing sound that would calm anyone down, especially once the lyrics are factored in. There’s a strong folk vibe throughout but there is also a tiny bit of a psychedelic nuance that makes the tune more interesting, especially since it has a very simple melodic structure. Lead singer Elliot Hayward’s voice sails along smoothly over guitar twangs that has the ability to soothe ones soul. As mentioned before, the lyrics contribute to the overall feel of drifting in and out of sleep. Hayward starts off with “if everyone like you found somebody like me there’d be less painful things to do, less scary things to do.” That might read as a cocky statement but it is actually a loving sentiment as Hayward goes on to sing “if you’re ever sad I’ll be sad too/that’s not so bad/sadness shared between two.” He uses this same formula when he talks about bad dreams, and the idea of having scary or sad times being more bearable by going through it with someone you love is comforting. And that is exactly what this song is. A warm blanket of comfort.
