ZGRT is the new musical project from New York City based songwriter/producer Zachery Allan Starkey, who has been a staple of Brooklyn’s underground music scene for nearly a decade. After releasing a trio of well received solo albums, Starkey founded ZGRT as a a vehicle for both solo and collaborative recordings. Starkey produced ZGRT’s first single,the dark, politically infused techno anthem HARD POWER, with Gavin Russom (LCD Soundsystem / Black Meteoric Star / DFA Records). In March 2017, Starkey and ZGRT released the uplifting, House inspired single CONNECTION, followed shortly by the full length HARD POWER album. The album, written and performed primarily by Starkey and produced with Abe Seiferth, features songs about the increasingly unstable state of global politics, the seedy undersides New York City nightlife, and sexual and relationship dynamics, powered by analogue synthesizers and drum machines. Channeling influences such as Jamie Principle, Depeche Mode, Patti Smith, Giorgio Moroder, Frankie Knuckles, Prince, The Cure, DAF, New Order, Public Image Ltd, and Curtis Mayfield, Starkey uses ZGRT to create music you can think to as well as dance to. Future singles include Black Angel and Game Over.
Recently, Starkey and ZGRT toured with electro pioneers New Order for their US Music Complete Tour, including sold out shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and Tower Theater in Philadelphia.
Starkey and the ZGRT live incarnation, featuring core members and longtime collaborators Laura Holden (Synthesizer), Frank Michael Piccarillo (Bass Guitar, Percussion), Alicia Chan (Synthesizer), Amy Godsey (Synthesizer) Avi Jacob (Drums), and Genevieve Kimmel Morris/LAUDS (Synthesizer and Viola) are currently touring to support the new HARD POWER album with their astonishingly loud and energetic live show. Piccirillo and Godsey both feature on the HARD POWER album, contributing bass guitar and additional keyboards to the song Game Over. Starkey is also the co-founder of Brooklyn’s storied C//TY CLUB party, producing and Djing with residents Lauren Flax, Gavin Russom, and Katie Rex.
