Music Existence Because of Music, We Exist
Florida’s Kamelot are back on the road in support of their latest studio album, Haven. The 2nd leg of the North American tour, once again featuring Britain’s Dragonforce, hit New Jersey’s Starland Ballroom this past Saturday for an evening of high energy metal.
In true Kamelot fashion, the band’s production was atmospheric and theatrical with a balanced setlist of new tracks off Haven, and a good peppering of older classics such as “When The Lights Are Down,” “Center Of The Universe,” and “March of Mephisto”. I’d be hard pressed to believe that any fan would still have any misgivings regarding frontman Tommy Karevik’s handling of Kamelot classics. Having joined the band in 2012 after ex-lead Roy Khan’s departure, Karevik has assimilated flawlessly into the lineup made up of founder Thomas Youngblood (guitar), Sean Tibbetts (bass), Casey Grillo (drums) and Oliver Palotai (keyboard). Karevik’s soaring vocals are impeccable; his charisma and personable fan-interaction absolutely magnetic.
A particular poignant part of the evening was Karevik’s dedication to his grandfather with a gorgeous performance of “Here’s To The Fall” off Haven. The 15-track set was balanced between uplifting metal anthems and melodic ballads, rounded by Casey Grillo’s explosive drum solo. This is one of those monster-tours that are absolute musts to any metal fan.
