Album Review: VOLUME by SKINDRED

Since 1998, SKINDRED has been responsible for developing their own unique sound blending elements of Metal, Rock, Reggae, Dancehall & Electronica. Add to this one of the most charismatic front men in Rock music in Benji Webbe, a man that always knows how to get the party started. Whether it’s getting millions of people across the globe to do the now infamous Newport Helicopter or just making them rock harder than they have ever rocked before at any show previously.

VOLUME by SKINDRED comes out on Friday, Ocotober 30th. I’ve been lucky enough to give it a listen for the past few weeks and I can’t complain. This album has a lot of hidden gems throughout. While listening to the album, you’ll hear all sorts of different genres of music. SKINDRED does a great job at continuing the legacy they are known for, which is playing various different types of music and combining them to make their own unique sound.

Under Attack is the opening song on the album and happens to be the first single from the album. It has been getting normal air play on Sirius XM’s Octane. It can easily be seen as to why this is the first song on the album. It’s fast paced, catchy, and just an overall addicting hard rock song. It has a futuristic melody in the middle of the song, which gives you the feel you’re entering another dimension. As soon as you feel comfortable in the new dimension and are getting used to it, you’re brought right back to reality by Dan Pugsley. Dan’s a kick ass bass player and does a great job of finger picking and slapping the instrument, like I’ve never heard before.

Some other stand out tracks on this album include the title track VOLUME and the track titled I. On VOLUME, this track has an electric start, that gives off hints of it being an EDM inspired song. Soon enough, you’ll  hear bits and peaces of reggae and rap, while at the same time it can be classified as a metal song. This song is about not being able to keep the volume down, hence the name. Listening to this song will make you want to do nothing but crank it up to the highest volume level possible. Keep turning it up!

Before I had mentioned a track by the name of I. This track in particular is unique because of air horns. Yes, air horns. Just when you think you’ve heard everything on a rock, rap, metal, reggae record… air horns come into the mix.

Considering that this is the sixth studio album from SKINDRED, it’s a great collection of unique elements that forge the SKINDRED sound as we know it today. If you’re a fan of any of their previous studio work or just a fan of rock music and rap music, you’ll find tracks on this album that speak to you.
